What words do to our nervous system
Purpose of the module
Raising awareness of how words directly influence safety.
Your role as PAV
- Slow down
- Give meaning
- Make micro-harm visible
- Safeguard the frame, no naming & shaming
Understanding how language can strengthen safety, or unintentionally cause harm.
Introduction
We underestimate language. But words are never neutral.
They can:
- Reassure
- Belittle
- Normalize
- Connect
- Exclude
And the body responds immediately. A single sentence can push your nervous system into stress, or allow it to settle.
Theme 1
Seemingly harmless language
Examples such as:
“Don’t be so sensitive.”
“You just don’t get it.”
“You should be able to handle this.”
“That’s not how I meant it.”
What happens here:
- Tension is neutralized
- Boundaries are shifted
- Doubt is redirected to the recipient
Theme 2
Connecting language
Examples:
“May I ask you something about what just happened?”
“How was this for you?”
“I want to understand what’s going on.”
“Thank you for sharing this.”
What happens here:
- Space
- Recognition
- Safety
- Connection
Theme 3
Language and power
Those who define the norm, define the language.
That is why awareness is crucial:
- Leaders
- Informal leaders
- Confidential advisors
- HR
- Teams
Everyone contributes to the tone.
Reflection questions
- Which sentence has ever affected you, positively or negatively?
- What happened in your body at that moment?
- Which language would you like to hear more often?
Mini-poll

⬜ Yes
⬜ Sometimes
⬜ No
Language is not “just communication.” Language is culture. And therefore also safety, or unsafety.
