What Works (and What Doesn’t) in Prevention?

Goal of This Module:
To raise awareness among employees and managers about existing preventive interventions within the organization, gain insight into which are perceived as effective or not, and create space for reflection and improvement.

Prevention in Practice – What Really Works?

Introduction:
Many organizations invest in prevention: training sessions, codes of conduct, confidential advisors, dialogue days… But what truly sticks? What feels valuable, and what remains mostly on paper? This module helps to gain insight into the impact of existing preventive actions and where improvements are possible.

Scenario:
An organization holds an annual training on boundary-crossing behavior. Attendance is mandatory. Yet, employees report that they do not feel free to discuss problems. What does this indicate?

Content:

  • Examples of commonly used preventive measures:

    • Codes of conduct

    • (Mandatory) e-learnings

    • Social safety workshops

    • Internal reporting points or confidential advisors

    • Team meetings or peer consultations

  • Reflection on intention vs. impact:

    • Is it visible in behavior?

    • Is it embedded in daily work practice?

    • Is it recognized as helpful?

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which intervention have you truly benefited from? What made it work?
  2. What felt like a ‘box-ticking exercise’? Why didn’t it work for you?
  3. Is there something you feel is missing in the area of prevention?

Mini-poll (anonymous):

  • “In my organization, prevention is mostly experienced as a formal obligation.” (Agree/Disagree)

  • “I have confidence in my organization’s preventive approach.” (Scale question)

  • Open: “Name one initiative that, in your opinion, would be more effective than what we currently do.”

Goal for the Confidential Advisor: This module provides valuable input for:

  • Evaluation of existing interventions

  • Strategic recommendations to HR, management, or executive board

  • Developing more supported, practice-oriented forms of prevention

Closing Message: Prevention only works when it aligns with what people experience, need, and recognize as supportive. Your experience matters. Your suggestions make the difference.
