Exercise for The Proactive Confidential Advisor

The proactive confidential advisor develops not only through conversations but especially through reflection, visibility, and strategic practice. The exercise below helps you avoid reactive language, make your role visible, and generate structural impact within your organization. You can use this exercise on your own, during peer supervision, or in collaboration with HR or management.

Reflection Exercise: From Case to Culture Issue

Goal: Don’t view conversations as isolated “cases,” but as entry points to broader patterns.

Step 1: Describe a recent conversation (without personal details):

  • What was the central theme?

  • What behavior, dynamic, or system became visible?

Step 2: Formulate the broader question:

  • What does this situation reveal about the organization’s culture, workload, leadership, or structure?

Step 3: Identify a possible preventive step:

  • Who needs to hear this?

  • What intervention could help address this pattern early?

Example:
Conversation about fear of making mistakes → pattern of perfectionism in Team X → suggestion to HR: training on psychological safety.
